Thanks Jeremi and Zachary. Your words and wisdom are vital to our republic, and a great comfort to the many who feel lost in these troubled times.

Jeremi,

I see you regret the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. The family was divided more or less evenly between Trump and Harris; Patrice voted for Ms. Harris, and I voted for Mr. Trump. My sisters also divided evenly, and three of my five children may have voted for Harris, but this will be discussed in due time.

Peggy Noonan encapsulated my decision; The race is deadlocked with six weeks to go, and if you’re an undecided, unsure, or wavering voter, it looks like Awful vs. Empty. Peggy Noonan Sept. 19, 2024, WSJ

I outlined my issues—global warming, Ukraine, Israel, border security–then criteria—Harris/Trump management record–and decided. My career inclined me towards effectiveness and, if possible, collegiality. Given a choice, I go for effectiveness.

France treats us well, though the French language bites my butt.   German and Russian seem, in retrospect, to have been easy. I invite you to Semur-en-Auxios, France, to test one of the best IPA beers on this side of the Library Bar ( near Union South? It’s been a while).

Such a good piece. This may not be a particularly mature response, but late on Tuesday night, I turned off the "news" and have been actively avoiding it since. I can't even stomach The Daily Show right now. I don't know when I'll start following the news again (I have always been a passionate news junkie), but right now, in the words of the young 'uns, I just can't. I don't know what to do and I don't know what to encourage my adult children to do. Do we stay? Do we leave? Is the whole world going this direction? My children's father is from Mexico and they have a Spanish last name -- are they at risk? I'm a woman with two daughters -- are we at risk? Reading your words has been somewhat therapeutic, but I don't know how long it will take to feel even close to "ok" again. And of course, the supreme irony: leadership development everywhere -- and yet such a dearth of leadership. I also wonder how someone who didn't vote for Harris doesn't see that as a vote for Trump? Jeremi, I'd like to share this -- can I just copy the URL and pass it on??

As someone who has never voted for Trump (and did not vote for Harris either), I wonder what the political Left in this country will learn from Trump. Trump offers retribution and grievance in a chalice, and a swath of Americans of all races and socioeconomic groups increasingly feel the need to drink from this poisonous and isolationist brew.

But why? What do they see (or not see) in the Left that has turned them away? That I think is the better question.

A mentor of mine once said, “may Trump rule for a thousand years, or however long it takes for us to learn our lesson.” If the proverbial plague has descended on Egypt (again), what is it here to teach us?

It IS heartbreaking, Jeremi. It baffles me that such a large number of people would follow and support a man who has repeatedly told them — and the rest of us — exactly who he is and what he will do. It’s going to be a hard few years.

It is incumbent upon us teachers to not only seek the truth but to live it to our students. The weeks leading up to the election offered great teaching opportunities however it was hard to see the non want of discourse among some students. My faith in our future rests with my students who stood up for what they believed in and stated they will work to be the positive change they wish to see in the world
